²⁰ See *Indian Museum Bulletin*, No. 1, p. 16; cf. also Majumdar Sastri, Cunningham's *Ancient Geography of India*, pp. li-lii. The archaeologists' spade has laid bare the ruins of such great cities as Takṣaśilā in the Rawalpindi District, Vidiśā in the Bhilsa District, Vijayapurī in the Guntur District and many others. The ruins of Takṣaśilā hold out before us a picture of ancient Indian city life which no literary work could have supplied.
