Above thirty *li* to the north-east of Mangkil was the *O-pu-to* (Abdhuta or Marvellous) stone tope above forty feet high. The Buddha had preached and taught here, and after his departure the tope emerged from the ground and became an object of worship. West from this stone tope across a great river thirty or forty *li* was a Buddhist temple (*ching-shê*) in which was an image of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Kuan-tzŭ-tsai P'usa) of mysterious power with miraculous manifestations; it was an object of pilgrimage for Buddhists and its worship was continuous.
