v1.c15.69
Our pilgrim here, as we have seen, calls Devadatta's father Hu-fan-wang which is a literal rendering of Droṇodanarāja. This Droṇodanarāja was a brother of king Suddhodana the father of Gautama Buddha. By a strange slip of the pen Julien makes the pilgrim here describe Devadatta as "le fils du roi Ho-wang", and the mistake is of course repeated by others. We are to meet with this troublesome man Devadatta again in the Records.
