v2.c18.s2.44

Our pilgrim's account of the Buddha's stopping the Licchavis from following him to Kuśinagara agrees to some extent with the story in the "Ta-pan-nie-p'an-ching".¹ Fa-hsien places the river (or as he calls it, deep trench) which the Buddha created, five (in the Korean text ten) yojanas to the west of Vesāli, a much greater distance than the 50 or 60 *li* of our passage. The Nirvāna treatise makes the river to have been produced between Vesāli and the *Kan-t'u* (or *ch'a* or *chih*) village, the Bhaṇḍagāma of the Pali Suttanta.
