v1.c7.82
सात is the regular form of the early Tadbhava class, like भात and others. In सत्ता we have rather a curious phenomenon which requires fuller analysis; the words are सताईस, सतावन, सतासि, सतानवे, etc. In Prakrit we do not uniformly find the long â, e.g. sattavîsatimo, "twenty-seventh," but sattânave, "ninety-seven." But there is a remarkable uniformity in all the seven modern languages. We find the long â in all of them for "twenty-seven"; in all but P. and S. for "fifty-seven"; in all for "eighty-seven" and "ninety-seven."
