¹ The phrase *aṣṭa-varṇa* occurring in the *prahelikā* is also found, as Mr. G. K. Śaṅkara points out in the Mamandur Inscription of Mahendravarman I. Premacandra on Daṇḍin interprets *puṇḍraka* instead of *pallava* in the verse, which fact indicates that it is capable of a different interpretation.
