v1.c12.5

The only definite terminus to Daṇḍin’s date is obtained from references in South Indian vernacular works on Alaṃkāra, belonging in all probability to the 9th century A.D., which cite him as an established authority. The Sinhalese treatise *Siya-bas-lakara*, which Barnett thinks cannot "in any case be later than the 9th century A.D."³, cites Daṇḍin in v 2 as one of its authorities. The Kanarese work *Kavirājamārga*, attributed to the Rāṣṭrakūṭa prince Amoghavarṣa Nṛptuṅga (who flourished about the first half of the 9th century), gives six verses⁴ which are exact translations of corresponding verses in Daṇḍin. Pāṭhak, in the introduction to his edition of this work (p. 19), further adds that in ch. iii most of the verses "are either translations or adaptations from the Kāvyādarśa", and that there are also convincing indications of Daṇḍin's "influence on other parts of the work" as well.
