The oldest known exponent of this system is Bharata, from whom spring all later systems and theories such as we know them, and whom even the Dhvanikāra and Ānandavardhana came into the field. The presence of *rasa* is such a familiar fact in Sanskrit Poetry as well as in comparatively modern Sanskrit writers on Poetics that one is apt to lose sight of this fact of historical importance.
