Among Alwars, Nammālwar or Śathagopa of Kurukapuri,³ also known as Parāśara or Vakulābharaṇa was the greatest. He was the son of Kari and Uḍayamangai and was born at Tirukkuruhur in the 43rd year Kali of 3059 B.C.⁴ His original name was Maran. After a period of contemplation while yet a child, he became inspired and the result of it was the singing of the Tamil Prabandham Nālāyiram. This has been rendered into Sanskrit Kurukeśagāthānukaraṇa by Rāmānuja, son of Govinda of Kāśyapagotra,⁵ and in Tātparyaratnāvali by Vedāntadeśika.⁶
