Viśvâmitra, the father of Madhuchhandas, and himself one of the ancient Rishis, concludes his first hymn¹ with the words, "I have proclaimed, O Agni, these thy ancient songs², and new songs for thee who art old. These great libations have been made to him who showers benefits upon us: the sacred fire has been kept from generation to generation."
