¹ विपाटितं means “torn,” and corresponds with Sûtra, “a thread.” A similar expression is विच्छिन्नं, which is applied, for instance, to the Mahâbhâshya, when it fell into disuse in Kashmir. See Râjataranginî, Histoire des Rois du Kashmire, traduite et commentée par M. A. Troyer, iv. 487.; and Böhtlingk, Pâṇini, p. xvi. The true sense seems to be that in which Devarâjayajvan uses विच्छिन्न in such passages as तच्चाध्ययनं कलियुगे प्रायेण विच्छिन्नसंप्रदायमासीत्॥ A work was lost when the chain of the oral tradition was broken.
