Since the year 1917, the foundation of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Poona, which has been taken as the starting point of this survey, there has been quite an amount of valuable addition of books and articles in the field of Epic and Purāṇic Studies, in common with other branches of Indology. These are necessarily of unequal merit and importance. In the following pages, it is proposed to review important publications concerning the *Mahābhārata*, *Bhagavadgītā*, *Rāmāyaṇa* and Purāṇas, which appeared during the last thirty-seven years.¹
