The Brahman, originally signifying prayer or magic spell, then sacred knowledge or Veda, was in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa already made the foundation of all existence. From this only a step remained to the doctrine of the Brahman itself as a creative principle. This doctrine too is found in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa, where it says:¹⁵
