The *Kaṭhopaniṣad* tells that fire having entered the universe assumed all forms.²⁰ The *Chāndogya*, however, maintains that the fire was the first to evolve from the primeval Being, and that from fire came water, and from water the earth.²¹ Fire cannot in reality be regarded as the origin of things as it burns up all.
