The genitive case. The genitive post-position ণ of Prākrita changes to র in Bengali. In the place of Prākrita অগ্নীণ we have Bengali অগ্নির; ণ often changes to ‘ড়’ or ‘র’ and and examples of this are numerous in the Uriyā dialect. Bopp, however, considers the genitive affix র to have been derived from the Sanskrit affix ক in the genitive plural froms as অস্মাকম্, যুগ্মাকম্ &c. Dr. Hœrnle traces this র to Sanskrit কৃত, changed into কেরক, কের, কর and other forms in the Prākrita and Hindi dialects. Rājā Rājendra Lāl is of opinion that the Bengali র comes from the Sanskrit genitive affix স্য.
