In the Sānkhyāyana Gṛhya Sutra ii. 2. 2, we are told that the knots of the *mekhalā* may be one, three or five, and the commentator adds that the knots should be equal in number to one's *pravaras*. The author of the Saṃskāra Kaustubha quotes a *smṛti* to the same effect. But the explanation is unsuited to the first case, *viz.*, of one knot, and I am inclined to take it to be a later suggestion.
