† Zend *Zayanō*, denoting winter, probably preserves an older meaning, when *hayana* was used to denote the second of the two seasons (summer and winter) into which Dr. Schrader believes that the year was primevally divided. Some of the synonyms for the year in Sanskrit originally denoted particular season, *e. g.*, *Varshâ*, *Sharad*. *Samâ* and *Hâyana* may be similarly supposed to have been derived from the names of the half year or *ayana*.
