∗ The passage is quoted in India: what it can teach us? p. 323; Sâyaṇa there quotes Taitt. San. vii. 4. 8., and after noticing that the Chitrâ and the Phalgunî full moon are both said to begin the year, he observes :—अथवा फाल्गुनचैत्रौ वसंतः मुखं वा एतत्संवत्सरस्य यत्फाल्गुनीपूर्णमास इति श्रुतेः। एवं च सौरचांद्रभेदभिन्नं वसंतद्वयमुपसंगृहीतं भवति। The theory of the two fold seasons thus appears to have been started simply to reconcile the two statements about the Chitrâ and Phalgunî full moons.
