⁸⁴ See also Burnell, *Catalogue*, pp. 40, 41.—*Ibid.*, p. 44, we find a ‘Svaraparibháshá, or Sámalakshaṇa,’ specified. Kaiyaṭa also mentions a ‘*sámalakshaṇaṃ prátiśákhyaṃ śástram*,’ by which he explains the word *ukthártha*, which, according to the Mahábháshya, is at the foundation of *aukthika*, whose formation is taught by Páṇini himself (iv. 2. 60); see *I. St.*, xiii. 447. According to this it certainly seems very doubtful whether the Sámalakshaṇa mentioned by Kaiyaṭa is to be identified with the extant work bearing the same name. [^asterisk]: Shaḍguruśishya, in the introduction to his commentary on the Anukramaṇí of the Ṛik, describes Kátyáyana as ‘*upagranthasya káraka*.’
