The Vájasaneyi-Saṁhitá, in both recensions, has been edited by myself (Berlin, 1849–52), with the commentary of Mahídhara,¹³¹ written towards the end of the sixteenth century; and in the course of next year a translation is intended to appear, which will give the ceremonial belonging to each verse, together with a full glossary. Of the work of Úaṭa, a predecessor of Mahídhara, only fragments have been preserved, and the commentary of Mádhava, which related to the Káṇva recension,¹³² appears to be entirely lost. Both were supplanted by Mahídhara's work, and consequently obliterated; an occurrence which has happened in a similar way in almost all branches of Indian literature, and is greatly to be regretted.
