¹⁶⁴ This explanation of the name, though the traditional one, is yet very likely erroneous; by Brahmaveda (a name which is first mentioned in the Śáṅkh. Gṛihya, i. 16) we have rather to understand 'the Veda of *brahmáṇi*,' of prayers, *i.e.*, here in the narrower sense of 'incantations.' (St. Petersburg Dict.)
