∗ We have a most significant illustration of the gradual growth of the Mahá-Bhárata in an episode commented upon by Śaṃkara, which by the time of Nílakaṇṭha (*i.e.*, in the course of 6 or 7 centuries) had become expanded by a whole chapter of 47 *ślokas*; see my *Catal. of the Sanskrit MSS. in the Berlin Lib.*, p. 108.
