v1.c7.s2.17

¹ Thus *Friedrich Schlegel* writes in a letter to *Goethe* that he has set himself the task "of bringing to light that which has been forgotten and unappreciated," and therefore had turned from Dante to Shakespeare, to Petrarch and Calderon, to the old German heroic songs, "In this manner I had to a certain extent exhausted the European literature, and turned to Asia in order to seek a new adventure." (*A. Hillebrandt*, "Alt-Indien" Breslau, 1899, p. 37.) *Aug. Wilh. von Schlegel* also writes (Indische Bibliothek, p. 8) that he desires, by means of his essays, to point the way to a certain extent for those of his compatriots "who wish to taste the adventure (for an adventure it remains after all)."
