³ According to E. W. Hopkins (the Punjab and the Ṛgveda, JAOS., 19, 1898, 19-28) the habitations of the Aryan Indians at the time when the majority of the hymns were composed, should be sought in the neighbourhood of Amballa, between the rivers Sarasoutī and Ghuggar. The rivers of the Punjab are praised in the famous "Praise of the Rivers" (nadīstuti), Ṛv. X, 75. Cf. A. Stein, JRAS. 1917, 91 ff. Hertel has not yet convinced me that the oldest parts of the Ṛgveda were composed in Iran and not in India (Indo-german. Forschungen, 41, 1923, p. 188).
