v1.c8.s3.104

Here we may mention the magnificent hymn to Varuṇa (Ath. IV, 16), the first half of which celebrates the almighty power and omniscience of God in language which is familiar to us from the Psalms, but which is extremely rarely heard in India, while the second half is nothing but a vigorous exorcism-formula against liars and libellers, such as are not infrequent in the Atharvaveda. I give the first five verses of this remarkable poem in the beautiful poetical translation of Muir,[^3) and verses 6-9 in the prose translation of M. Bloomfield.[^4)
