³ The derivation of the word is doubtful. It can be derived either from bráhman (neut.) in the sense of "sacred speech, prayer, sacred knowledge," or from brahmán (masc.) "priest" in general or "Brahman priest," or also from brāhmaṇa (masc.) "the Brahman, the member of the priestly caste, the theologian."
