v2.c19.s3.t2.197

² *Oldenberg*, in his researches as to the style of the Jātakas (NGGW 1918, 429 ff.; 1919, 61 ff.) comes to the conclusion that the Jātaka Gāthās represent a more ancient type of poetry than the epic. He is compelled to admit, however, that it is not possible to decide for certain whether that type which is more primitive as regards development is, at the same time, also the earlier as regards actual chronology.
