³ Nos. 57, 208. *Benfey,* Pantschatantra I, 420 ff. This fable has also been found among the Suahelis in Africa, s. R. *Köhler,* GGA., 1870, p. 1658; Kleinere Schriften, I, 515, and *Franke,* WZKM., 7, 1893, 215 f., 384 f. The frame-story of Book II of the Tantrākhyāyika, too, has a parallel in Jāt. No. 206, and there is a very beautiful relief of this on the Bharhut Stūpa (Cunningham, Pl. 27, Fig. 9).
