³ *Charpentier* (WZKM 24, 1910, 351 ff.) has shown that the text of the Cariyāpiṭaka as we have it at present, was remodelled under the influence of the Jātaka commentary, and (we may add) deteriorated by it. I do not think it is possible to reconstruct an original Cariyāpiṭaka, as was attempted by *Charpentier* (l.c., Cf. *WZKM* 27, 1913, p. 94).
