³ The Pāli work begins with a few introductory verses, and towards the end of the introduction, too, we find a few verses. *Schrader* (pp. xxvi, xxxii) regards these verses as the remnants of a Pāli poem which originated in Ceylon. I think they are only Gāthās of the kind which occur so frequently in the Suttas of the Tipiṭaka, and which were at all times popular in India for the embellishment of prose narratives.
