v2.c19.s6.11

¹ Sanskrit Pratītya-sam-utpāda, “the dependently-co-ordinated-origination” (Stcherbatsky). The usual translation “formula of cusality” is not quite correct, for the doctrine is not of a succession of cause and effect, but is that of a mutually interdependent conditionality. The established formula runs thus: "If there is this, then there appears that." *Cf.* Th. *Stcherbatsky*, The Conception of Buddhist Nirvāṇa, Leningrad, 1927, p. 39 ff.
