⁵ Divy., p. 36 ff. *L. de La Vallée Poussin*, Bouddhisme, Paris, 1909, p. 275 ff., sees in Pūrṇa the type of the Mahāyānist Bodhisattva. However, both in the Divy. and the Pāli Saṃyuttanikāya 35, 88 (IV, p. 60 ff.) and the Majjhimanikāya 145 (III, 267 ff.) the stress is laid on the mildness and equanimity which characterise the perfect saint, the Arhat; and therefore it shows rather the Hīnayāna ideal of an Arhat.
