¹ I do not agree with S. *Lévi* when (JA 1892, s. 8, t. XIX, p. 202) he calls the Buddha-Carita “un abrégé substantiel du Lalita Vistara.” At least the Lalita-Vistara in its present form cannot have been the model which Aśvaghoṣa used.
