The work also calls itself a Mahā-Nidāna, *i.e.*, "a great (Sūtra treating) of the beginnings (of the Buddha's career,") and "Lalita-Vistara-Purāṇa," a term which is fitting in so far as the style of the work is not unlike that of the Purāṇas.
