The Śikṣā-Samuccaya, "the Sum Total of the Doctrine,"² is a manual of Mahāyāna Buddhism, which consists of 27 Kārikās (memorial verses) and an extensive commentary compiled, together with the Kārikās, by the author himself. I say intentionally that the commentary was "compiled" by Śāntideva, for it consists almost entirely of quotations and extracts from the sacred texts, which he has grouped around his Kārikās and arranged in chapters.
