v3.c35.s5.12

In Kashmir there lived also the prolific writer Kṣemendra³, who has enriched almost all branches of literature. He wrote epics and dramas, abridged the Mahābhārata and the Rāmāyaṇa, rendered the Kādambarī and Bṛhatkathā into verses, composed religious poems and didactic stanzas, wrote works on poetics, prosody and politics, and did not spare even obscene topics. Some of his books are dated 1037, 1050, 1052 and 1066. In his earlier years he was an ardent devotee of Śiva, but later got converted to Vaiṣṇavism and followed the dictates of the Bhāgavata with ardour. Although he was not a Buddhist, yet he had a heart, large enough, to adopt Buddhist legends for his subjects.
