The evidence of sculptures and paintings is corroborated by the data of Dharmaśāstra and classical Sanskrit literatur . Several Smṛitis like those of Manu and Yājñavalkya lay down detailed rules about the life of women, but they nowhere lay down that women were not to go out except when properly veiled.
