It is true that we sometimes find one and the same work like *Manusmṛiti* laying down that a husband should wait for a long time in order to be sure that his wife is barren, and also permitting supersession on the flimsy ground of the wife being disagreeable. This is due to the blending of the earlier and later tradition in the same work.
