² In his *Kādambarī* Bāṇa expressly refers to the case of Uttarā in justification of the conduct of Mahāśvetā in deciding to survive her lover. We, however, find Uttarā represented as burning herself with her husband Abhimanyu in the Bali island version of the Mahābhārata. The reason of the discrepancy is obvious; the Bali island version belongs to a time when the custom of Satī had become popular.
