Brāhmaṇas enjoyed high social privileges in ancient India. Some of them used to take to the military profession also and would often found their own republican states ; one such state existed in Sindh at the time of the invasion of Alexander the Great. In Brāhmaṇa republics they enjoyed the privileged position, but whether they had the same in Kshatriya republics, we do not know.
