The village office had to keep records of rights and transfers of the village lands, as also papers connected with the government dues and their realisation. Correspondence had to be carried on with the district authorities and central government and the decisions and resolutions of the village council had to be duly recorded. All this work was entrusted to another village officer, known as village accountant. His post also was hereditary in most provinces and he also was paid rent-free land. In Tamil country, however, he was appointed by the village assembly.⁴
