⁶ Sometimes we come across more than one village headman; some villages in Karnāṭak had as many as six or even twelve headmen (*Rāshṭrakūṭas*, pp. 189-90). This was probably due to the necessity of accommodating the claims of the nemuerous branches of the original family. Usually, however, claims were adjusted by alloting the office to each branch by rotation.
