² Compare Z.W., II, for the interesting story, how ‘Ala-ud-din Khalji loved a mistress named Mahak which could not long be kept a secret from his wife and mother-in-law. He loved this mistress too deeply to give her up on any account. It happened by chance that once when the lovers were together, the daughter and mother-in-law came upon them. An ugly scene then ensued. Probably the incomers belaboured Mahak which led ‘Ala-ud-din to rescue her forcibly from them. In doing so, he struck his wife, who, incidentally, was the daughter of Sultan Jalal-ud-din Khalji, the reigning monarch. As a result of this unpleasantness, ‘Ala-ud-din went to the Deccan.
