However, all ranks of nobles were assigned sufficient funds to employ a large number of retainers and to maintain a big establishment commensurate with their position. These establishments sometimes swelled to enormous dimensions.⁵ Further their rank and status were duly considered in the State ceremonies and in the assignment of their seats in all official functions.⁶
