¹ A *mandapa* in rural areas at present is usually a tree-trunk. Compare Grierson for present conditions in Bihar. Bihar Peasant Life, 374-86. In the description of Malik Muhammad Jaisi the usual tree-trunk studded with valuable stones and covered with green twigs is surrounded by pillars of sandal-wood and covered with a roof from which globes of talc were hung, and a scarlet cloth was spread on the floor. Probably a platform was raised under this structure.
