Considering that the diversity of Indian dress still engages the mind of some people who would very much like to evolve a common dress for all Indians, it may be added here that Guru Nanak appears to have given considerable time and attention to the problem. He is reported in the Sikh tradition to have himself used a number of combinations of Hindu and Muslim dresses, without really succeeding in harmonizing the various distinctive features of each.⁵ The nobility, as we have pointed out, slowly evolved a common dress for themselves; and the poor people universally went about almost naked.
