Self-satisfaction was rather a rule of conduct for the individual in cases giving rise to doubts, than a source of law. It was merely the recognition of the right of a man to act according to the dictates of his own conscience when no definite rule of law was available as a guide. The other subsidiary authorities mentioned by Yājnavalkya, such as Mīmāmsā and Nyāya, were in reality guides for the interpretation of legal rules, and not exactly sources of law.
