Trench (khātaka) warfare and mining (khanaka) were known in ancient times. Chānakya praises these kinds of fighting, because under these systems the soldiers are in a very favourable position. Another method was that of fighting from heights (ākāśayuddha).³ The system of siege-warfare was also practised in Ancient India. Chānakya describes in detail the suitable time for commencing a siege, and for storming a besieged place.
