The political condition of India which made possible the foundation of the Mahomedan Empire is thus described by Stanley Lane-Poole : “ The country was split up into numerous Kingdoms, many of which were at feud with one another. There were the Brāhmana Kings of Gandhāra on the Indus, the Tomaras of Delhi and Kanauj, the Buddhist Pālas of Magadha, the survivors of the Guptas in Mālwā, the Kālachuris on the Nerbudda, the Chandillas of Mahoba, and many more, who united might have stemmed any invasion, but whose jealousies wrought their ruin.” How true is the remark: “Internal division has proved the undoing of India again and again, and has sapped the power of mere numbers which alone could enable the men of warm plains to stand against the hardy mountain tribes!”¹
