There is a large number of books and manuscripts in the British Museum, in the India Office Library, and in the Libraries at Oxford and Cambridge which profess to give the teachings of Chānakya, but none of them are of any use to the student of Political Science.³ A manuscript has, however, been recently found in the Oriental Manuscripts Library of Madras, entitled ‘Chānakya-sūtra,’⁴ which looks like an abridgment of a few chapters of the Arthaśāstra. The style of this work is akin to that of the Nītivākyāmṛita of Somadeva Sūri, and it probably belongs to the same period as the latter work.
